    and rope strength with knots
Tying knots has a wide variety of uses. They are used for naval, SAR, climbing, decorations, fishing, and many more reasons. Gorillas have used these knots too. Birds have also used them to make nests. Many cultures still use these knots to survive in everyday life.
The first knots with pre 18th century origins were in a medical treatsie. It was around the 4th century that these were described in it. They were intended for slings. There were 16 slings and 9 knots described. The knots were a square knot, overhand noose, larks head, clove hitch, overhand knot, fisherman loop knot, Tom fool knot, jug sling and a cat cradle. The estimated date was 386 AD and they may be off principles found in early works.
The Square knot was once known as the Hercules Knot. It is also referred to as the reeef knot. The original purpose was to secure bandages. It is also used to tie 2 ropes together. This practice is impractical and discouraged as it may result in death or injury.
